India is a country in South Asia. Area wise, it is the seventh largest and population wise it is the second most populated nation. It is the largest democracy in the world. It is surrounded by the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal on the south, southwest and southeast respectively. The land borders meet with Pakistan in the west; Nepal, Bhutan and China in the north; and Bangladesh and Myanmar in the east. its island, Andaman and Nicobar is near to Thailand and Indonesia.
India is a subcontinent. One of the oldest civilisation, known as Indus Valley Civilisation of the bronze age developed here. In the iron age of India, the oldest scriptures of Hinduism were written. Hinduism developed on social stratification based on caste system depending on the type of works they use to do. Buddhism and Jainism also developed later from Hinduism. Kingdom of Maurya and Gupta Empires are well known history in BC. These Middle age Kingdoms developed the cultures of Southeast Asia. In the medieval history of India, Judaism, Zoroastrianism, Christianity, and Islam came from outside of the land. Sikhism also emerged. All these added to a diverse culture. North India was ruled by Delhi Sultanate. South India were being ruled by Vijayanagara Empire. In the Indian history of eraly modern era, the Mughal Empire expanded. The Mughal era was followed by East India Company rule. Later, India was ruled by British Crown. In a nationalist movement under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi and many other leaders India got independence in 1947. Mahatma Gandhi is well known for nonviolence movement in India.
