Argentina facts: As per the known history, presence of human being has being has been  found from  the Palaeolithic period. In Pre-Colombian times, the Inca Empire extended its boundary to the northwest of the country. In the 16th century, the Spanish colonisation of the region started.  Argentina became the successor state of the Vice-royalty of the Río de la Plata which was a Spanish overseas vice-royalty (founded in 1776). The fight for independence continued from 1810 to 1818. Then it plunged into a civil war till 1861, when the country was recognised as  a federation of provinces with Buenos Aires (the capital city). After 1861, the country is in peace and stability comparatively

Due to fast  prosperity in the country, Argentina rose to the seventh wealthiest nation in the world by the early 20th century. From the statistical analysis of Maddison Historical Statistics Project, it is known that Argentina had the world's highest  GDP per capita in 1895 and 1896 and was placed among top ten before 1920. After the Great Depression in the 1930s, Argentina went into political instability and economic decline. This development pushed Argentina back into underdevelopment, however it still enjoyed the position among fifteen richest countries for many decades. After  the death of President Juan Perón in 1974, his 3rd wife, Isabel Martínez de Perón, became the president. In 1976, she was overthrown by a U.S. backed coup which installed a right-wing military dictatorship. The military government became brutal and used state terrorism that lasted until the election of a President named Raúl Alfonsín in 1983. Many leaders of  junta were later convicted  and sentenced to imprisonment for their crimes.
